RIVERKEEPER(R) is a trademarked name held by WATERKEEPER(R) Alliance.  WATERKEEPER Alliance licenses RIVERKEEPER, BAYKEEPER, COASTKEEPER, and other WATERKEEPER organizations.

Waterkeepers combine firsthand knowledge of their waterways with an unwavering commitment to the rights of their communities and to the rule of law. Whether they’re on the water tracking down polluters, in a courtroom advocating for stronger enforcement of environmental laws, in a town meeting rallying community support, or in a classroom educating young people, Waterkeepers defend their communities against anyone who threatens their right to clean water—from law-breaking polluters to unresponsive government agencies.

In each organization with an approved Waterkeeper, there is one person who is THE "Waterkeeper" for that waterbody.  It's the Waterkeeper's job to be the spokesperson for the waterway, to advocate for keeping the waters clean, and to stop pollution.

This is a HUGE job, and Waterkeepers rely on a strong network of dedicated volunteers and other staff within their organizations to help them keep their waterbodies clean.
