Mercury in Fish Can Harm You and Your Family's Health
In the 1950's a chemical company pumped mercury into Minamata Bay, Japan. After people there started eating highly contaminated seafood, serious side effects were noticed, from mental and physical birth defects to premature death in children whose mothers ate the fish--even when these mothers appeared to have no symptoms of poisoning themselves.
After this terrible incident came to light, more studies were conducted on the health effects of eating mercury contaminated seafood, and it was found that even low levels of mercury can have serious, long-lasting effects on developing babies and unborn children.
