1. Inform the public of the need for improvements to the City’s wastewater system.

Update on Atlantic Waste Proposed Landfill, Bryan County

Novemer 23, 2011 Update:  Citizens met in Pembroke to oppose the Atlantic Waste Landfill in Bryan County.  Over 200 citizens showed up to oppose the landfill.  Don Stack, attorney from Stack and Associates, received a round of applause for his comments opposing the landfill.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that citizens attend the next Bryan County Commissioners meeting in Richmond Hill.  Help ORK spread the word and bring the whole family.  We can't leave a legacy of pollution for our kids and their kids.

December 13, 2011 - Bryan County Commisioners meeting, Richmond Hill Annex, 5:30pm

For more information contact Dianna Wedincamp, 866-942-6222.

October 2011 Update: Citizens met at Black Creek Church to gather information on the proposed landfill by Atlantic Waste.  Don Stack from Stack and Associates was there to inform the citizens about the threats to the enironment and how to proceed going forward.

There are two meeting the citizens need to attend to make comments:

November 3rd - citizens need to be at the Bryan County Planning and Zoning in Pembroke at the Court House Anex at 7:00pm to voice your appinion about the text admendment.

November 15 - Citizens need to be at the Board of Commissioners meeting at the DIxie Harn Building on Lanier Street in Pembroke at 6:30pm.

For more information contact Bryan County Planning and Zoning office at 912-756-3177.

March 2011 Update:  The proposed landfill in Northern Bryan County by Atlantic Waste continues to build strong opposition.  At a meeting held at Black Creek Church on Monday night, March 28th, the crowd was standing room only with very vocal opponents of the landfill filling up the room and spilling outside.

ORK has completed an initial technical review of the potential site suitability issues with this proposed landfill.  We submitted the letter to the Bryan County Commissioners, the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the City of Pembroke this week.  You may view the technical memo and other documents in our library.

Landfills Under Consideration

Since the beginning of the year, we have had two reports of proposed commercial landfills in the Ogeechee basin.  The first is allegedly proposed in the Bryan County area near Pembroke and Black Creek.  It's Ogeechee Riverkeeper's understanding at this time that no permits have been filed, but the commerical interest is lobbying the Bryan County Board of Commissioners pretty hard.  Details to follow in the coming weeks.

The second proposed landfill is an inert landfill in Bulloch County in an old sand mining operation at the back of the industrial park.  The property backs up to Lotts Creek, and is potentially near drinking water wells.  The Bulloch County planning and zoning commission will take up the proposed landfill application on Feb 10, 2011 at 6:00 pm.  The application is available on our website, and we plan to have comments drafted on potential impacts in advance of the meeting.

All concerned citizens are encouarged to attend the planning and zoning meeting in Statesboro on Feb 10, 2011 6:00 pm.
