Ogeechee Riverkeeper just learned of this spill from an anynonymous caller. The amount of sewage spilled is quite significant. Dianna Wedincamp, Program Director, visited the area and found this sign posted on private property.

The signage erroneously states that the spill was a "minor" spill. Under Georgia regulations, a spill in excess of 10,000 gallons is a major sewage spill.

Ogeechee Riverkeeper is now monitoring the area to test for harmful bacteria that may still exist as a result of this spill and the repeated failures of the sewage treatment plant.

We should have more details available by June 20, 2010. Until then you can view the other documented sewage problems with this site.

EPD Releases Laurel View River Study Results, Riverkeeper Responds

Excessive nutrients from sewage can cause algae blooms, like this one pictured on the Canoochee River. The Georgia Environmental Protection Divison released their findingson the impacts of a proposed 3 million gallon a day discharge of sewage to the Laurel View River along Georgia's coast near Richmond Hill and Sunbury.

Ogeechee Riverkeeper reviewed the results and determined that the analysis conducted by EPD was fatally flawed due to the agency's failure to account for nitrogen pollution in all of its forms.

Ogeechee Riverkeeper believes that if this permit is issued as drafted, the sewage plant will add significant amounts of nutrients virtually unchecked into this vulnerable coastal area--potentially resulting in a reduction in fish and shellfish habitat, and unsightly alage blooms, similar to the Chesepeake Bay.
