Take a stand against corporate polluters!
In May 2011, Georgia experienced the largest fish kill in the state’s history when more than 33,000 Ogeechee River fish suddenly turned up dead in the Ogeechee River.
When investigators looked into it -- they found that King America Finishing, a textile plant outside of Dover, had been illegally dumping chemicals into the river for more than five years. Ogeechee Riverkeeper immediately began taking steps to bring charges against King America Finishing for their blatant violations of the Clean Water Act.
Although our actions helped encourage the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) to enter into a Consent Order imposing a 1 million dollar “Supplemental Environmental Project” (SEP), this amounts to a mere wrist slap compared to the damage done to the river.
We are asking for your help to hold these parties accountable for their responsibilities under the law.
Your donation will help us achieve these important goals:
- Review the Consent Order and challenge it in court
- Examine King America Finishing’s SEP for shortcuts and loopholes
- Pressure the EPD to require stricter controls on toxins released by King America Finishing
- Continually test water and soil around the facility to insure dumping is stopped
- Hire legal and scientific experts to review King America Finishing's new permit application, which would allow them to release toxic substances into our river
The Ogeechee River belongs to all of us.
